‘Not a Coincidence’: European Union Repeats John Howard’s 2001 Comments on Asylum Seekers

The European Commission President’s recent comments are an “absolute vindication” of John Howard’s remarks in 2001 promising to crack down on illegal migrants, says The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan.

Ursula Von Der Leyen said, “we will decide who comes to the European Union and under what circumstances”, mimicking Mr Howard’s statement, “we will decide who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come”.

“I don’t think it’s a coincidence, I think it is a further absolutely vindication of John Howard,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

“Nobody thought he could do it and then nobody thought Tony Abbott could do it after Labor unpicked the solution.

“Now you’ve got the European Union, the most politically correct body on the planet, actually quoting Howard’s words and actually you hear this all around the world and all around America.”
