MOSCOW – A group of former Oceanian leaders condemned the US-UK-Australia (AUKUS) militaristic alliance for fear of an arms race in the South Pacific, New Zealand radio RNZ broadcast on Wednesday .
“AUKUS is signaling an increase in militarization with Australia joining the network of US military bases in the North Pacific and is intensifying the arms race, bringing war closer to our home,” the former leaders of Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu and Palau said in a statement to the RNZ. They also expressed concern about New Zealand’s desire to join AUKUS.
The US-UK-Australia trilateral partnership was launched in September 2021 and provides for the build-up of the Australian military against the background of the US-China confrontation, including the creation of its own fleet of nuclear submarines.
